How much does computer repair cost on Long Island?
In-home computer repair with me is $100 an hour with a one-hour minimum, and the estimate is free. Most common jobs take one to two hours. Here's what typical jobs cost, what changes the price, and how to tell whether a repair is worth it.
Typical computer repair prices
These are typical times for jobs I do at homes and small offices across Nassau County. Your exact price depends on what I find, and you'll hear it before I start.
| Job | Typical time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Virus, pop-up or scam cleanup | 1 to 2 hours | $100 to $200 |
| Slow computer tune-up | 1 to 2 hours | $100 to $200 |
| New computer setup and file transfer | 1 to 2 hours | $100 to $200 |
| Wi-Fi or printer troubleshooting | 1 to 2 hours | $100 to $200 |
| Computer won't turn on (diagnosis) | About 1 hour | $100, plus parts if needed |
| Data recovery from a failing drive | Varies | Quoted after a free diagnosis |
Parts like a new SSD, memory or a charger are extra and billed at cost. See computer repair for everything I fix.
What changes the price
The biggest factor is time. A single stubborn problem, like a computer that won't start, can take longer to track down than a routine cleanup. Moving a lot of files, setting up several devices, or recovering data from a damaged drive also adds time. Parts add cost only when something actually needs replacing.
Repair or replace?
An older computer isn't always a lost cause. Replacing an old hard drive with an SSD, or adding memory, can make a five- or six-year-old computer feel new for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. My rule of thumb: if a repair would cost more than about half of a comparable new computer, replacing it usually makes more sense. I'll tell you honestly which way I'd go, and if you replace it, I can set up the new one and move your files.
How to keep the cost down
- Write down any error message, or take a photo of it.
- Have your passwords handy, especially for email and your Microsoft or Apple account.
- Bundle small jobs into one visit, since there's a one-hour minimum.
- If you can, back up important files before the visit, or ask me to.
In-home repair or a repair shop?
With in-home service, you don't have to unplug anything, drive anywhere or wait days without your computer. It's also the better choice when the problem involves your Wi-Fi, printer or other devices at home, because I can see the whole setup. A shop can make sense for physical repairs like a cracked laptop screen, which I don't do.
Common questions
How much does in-home computer repair cost on Long Island?
With Matthew's Tech & Home Solutions, computer repair is $100 an hour with a one-hour minimum, and estimates are free. Most common jobs, like a virus cleanup, a slow computer tune-up or a new computer setup, take one to two hours, so they usually cost $100 to $200 plus any parts.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are free. You'll know what the job should cost before any work starts.
What if the fix only takes 15 minutes?
There's a one-hour minimum, so a quick fix costs $100. If you have a few small things, like a printer, an email setup and a slow laptop, it's worth fixing them in the same visit.
Is it worth repairing an old computer?
Often, yes. Swapping an old hard drive for an SSD or adding memory can make an older computer feel new for much less than a replacement. If a repair would cost more than about half of a comparable new computer, replacing it usually makes more sense, and I'll tell you honestly.
Do you work on Macs?
For Macs, including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis, I do software troubleshooting only, including setup and updates. I don't do Mac hardware repair.
